False Creek Type from the 1970's

Here are some samples of early False Creek "logo" examples that I am using for inspiration for my concept.

Like what Bree did originally, making the images of False Creek the text, I tried to have the map be the image in the text. I also tried having waves form the letters.

I really liked what Dafne was doing, so I tried to keep working on using wave-like shapes and working within the circle. I also tried it in grayscale to see whether it would work - it looks really light to me.

concept 2 & 3

These are the layouts for the two concepts that Matt and I collaborated on.

The first concept shown features a bench in the shape of the map of False Creek. The bench is divided into four different sections. On the left, there are three levels of water fountains accommodate adults, children, and dogs. In the middle, there is a chair level seating area in between the stool seating areas. The bridges are represented by armrests that separate each section. Information will be printed on the armrests, and will provide maps and directions to key attractions in the False Creek area.

For the second concept, we decided to include the area surrounding False Creek as part of the bench, and have the area of False Creek filled with water. The whole bench is then covered by a layer of glass. A map will be printed on the surface of the bench, and background information regarding False Creek will be printed on the side of the bench. We thought of adding other small details like adding small lights for key locations, as well as including small boats that will sit under the surface of the glass and travel along the routes of ferries and aquabuses.

And I think Matt deserves a huge shout-out for creating all the amazing 3d models!

Logo ideas (early stages)

False Creek word associations:

community (family, unity, residents, people, visiters, kids, students)

nature ( plants, texture, green, lush)

Industry ( retail, tourism, business, shops, bustling)

wildlife (biodiverstiy, birds, ducks, geese, heron,

Recreation (canoe, kayak, leisure, tennis, walks, parks-water park)

Water (boats, water taxis)

History (past remains, first nations settlement, industrial waterway, coal mining, logging)

Colour Scheme: I chose to play with the colours green, blue and orangey-red as these colours kept popping up when I took pictures of False Creek for colour ideas. Below are a few early logo ideas influenced by the word associations.

Interactive Water Installation

Here was is an interesting concept for a water installation. I could see something like this along False Creek. Some kind of light installation around Granville Island as many people take evening walks. It would be a good way to keep safe as it would add a little colour and attention to the dark pockets around False Creek. Howeler + Yoon architecture are using the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania as a huge canvas to carve out the “Light Drift”. It’s a temporary interactive lighting installation that goes beyond the bank to the river itself. The installation creates a field of lights that transform in color and intensity based on the public interaction with it.

map and sketches

A mind map I created earlier on to draw ideas from
Some logo concepts
More logo concepts. I began playing with Bree's logo concept above but only sketching in the structure to make the letter instead of the outline of the letters. The second one is kind of following Cheryl's logo concept of "False" within the map. Then I just removed the map outline.
I took the map of False Creek as a starting point for the concepts. Following Bree's ideas of a bench or fountain, as a 3d map element with the 3 bridges as separators, the pieces could be benches with the bridges as armrests or backrests for people. The other concept is the map shape could be used for a large decorative water fountain (instead of a drinking fountain) or waterpark for children.

I continued to play with the idea of False Creek being made up of several parts, so I used lines to make it appear as though parts of the letters were coming together to form "False Creek". This is seen in the top left logo and the top and bottom right.

For the other logos, I played with the idea of water interacting with the letters. I used different brushes and layered them on top of the letters.

For all of them, colours could be changed so that we could have multiple logo options for different uses.

3d concept - mosaic

Earlier on, I mentioned that I liked how False Creek is a mixture of it's past and present. It's made up of bits and pieces that together form a colourful and vibrant whole, much like a mosaic. I was thinking that the mosaic could be a walkway, seating area, or even a fountain. There actually is a mosaic bench on Granville Island right now (as seen in the first image). Perhaps our mosaic could interact with water somehow, or be larger in scale.
http://inhabitat.com/lawnge-chairs-grassy-green-park-lounges-in-the-netherlands/ Bree, I'm not sure if you've seen this, but I came across it and thought you might find it interesting. Not exactly a bench, but it's a pretty cool idea for a lounge chair.

3D idea

I would like to create a structure that is usable as well as beautiful. Because False Creek has so much to offer outside to it’s visitors and residents, my initial concept is to create a bench that has a water fountain and dog water fountain built into it.

Here are some pictures (ranging from normal to,
let’s say, “modern”) of both park benches and
water fountains. The next step will be to combine the two together...
